Kiso Valley
The Kiso Valley is a high mountain pass and part of the old postal route. Edo era buildings in Nakatsagawa have been preserved (half-heartedly) while the towns of Magone and Tsumago (much higher up the mountains than Nakatsagawa) are largely restored to their original Edo period and are cultural heritage listed. Magone is closed to vehicles and is a much more pleasant place to meander. Both towns (though again Magone is better in my view) specialise in local handicrafts, wood work.
